First national study on institutionalised abuse in psychiatry launched: the AIBP’s report

Launched by the Italian Bipolar Association, the survey collects first-hand accounts to redefine what ‘abuse’ really means in mental health services.

With the article “When Treatment Does More Harm Than Good”, the Italian Bipolar Association (AIBP) has announced the launch of the first national study focusing on medical malpractice in psychiatry in Italy. The initiative aims to gather concrete evidence of improper practices and dehumanising treatments that remain widespread in psychiatric services, going beyond the most extreme cases to highlight even “normalised” abuses.

A rigorous and inclusive survey

The project is based on a clear scientific protocol that guarantees anonymity, emotional support and inclusivity. The testimonies collected will be used to reform clinical protocols, train healthcare professionals and guide the development of fairer health policies.

Not against, but together

The study does not seek to create divisions between patients and professionals, but to build alliances for a more humane system, where empathy, active listening and respect are not optional but an integral part of care.
An appeal is being made to the media, politicians and healthcare institutions: it is time to listen to those who experience mental health issues first-hand.
